IPC WHMA A-620: Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies

The IPC WHMA A-620 training course and certification has become the international acceptability standard.  Electrical and electronic products have multiple connection points and related assembly activities. The IPC WHMA A-620 course is an inspection course designed to help identify what is considered acceptable quality workmanship during the assembly of the product. This training complements the IPC/WHMA A610, and will give delegates the knowledge to inspect with confidence.

While delegates should have knowledge of industry language and a basic understanding of cable manufacture, wire harnessing and soldering, there are no specific prerequisites.

This course covers the requirements and associated acceptance across multiple product classes.

Crucial for operators involved in the manufacture of cable and wiring harness assemblies, this is a must have for anyone involved with assembly or inspection of cable and wire harness assemblies.

What does it cover?

Any team or person who work within an electronics manufacturing industry team would benefit from this standard and training.

Focusing on high-performance industries such as motorsport, aerospace and defence, all roles involved in the build, test or inspection of cable and wire harnesses should have a thorough understanding of the acceptance criteria for all three classes of product:

While aerospace, defence and motorsport electronics manufacturers usually work to Class 3, the training and its standard covers all three classes – Class1, Class 2 and Class 3.

(We discuss the different class levels in our blog – Electronics Manufacturing – mastering soldering basics)

In particular, the IPC WHMA A-620 course looks at all aspects of cable and wiring harness assembly, including inspection criteria including:

Crimp Termination and Insulation Displacement Connections

Soldered Terminations and High Voltage Applications

Connector Assembly, Over-Moulding and Potting

Ultrasonic Welding and Splices

Markings, Labels and Final Assembly

Co-Axial and
Bi-Axial Assemblies

Shielding and Protective Coverings

The IPC WHMA A-620 certification usually takes 3 days and is valid for 2 years. You can recertify within 3 months before expiry but if your certificate expires, you’ll need to take the full course again.

The optional practical element takes an additional day and is also valid for 2 years.

IPC/WHMA A-620 Training: Who is it for?

IPC/WHMA A-620 standard is aimed at those who are responsible for manufacturing or inspecting/assessing or assembling cable and wire harnesses.

Job roles that should consider this training are Assembly Operators, Quality Inspectors, Manufacturing Engineers, Production Managers, Goods-in Inspectors, Managers and Senior Leaders who should understand the importance of assembly quality.

IPC/WHMA A-620 Training: What is included?

The IPC WHMA A-620 training is delivered on-site at your business or at our dedicated training centre so you can upskill your team cost effectively. Certificates will be provided.

IPC A-610 Training and Certification FAQ’s

Do I need an electronics engineering qualification for the IPC WHMA A-620 course?

While not strictly required, some electronics experience is helpful. You should understand basic electronic theory, be able to identify components and have good soldering skills for practical courses.

If you’re new to soldering, we recommend taking our basic soldering course first.

Where are you located?

We’re centrally located in the UK with excellent transport links:

  • Address: MARQ-ONE Ltd, Eliot Park Innovation Centre, Barling Way, Nuneaton CV10 7RH
  • Easy access to major road and rail networks
  • Close to two international airports
How long does my IPC certification last?

All IPC Certifications (CIS, CSE, and CIT levels) are valid for two years. You can recertify within 3 months before expiry but if your certificate expires, you’ll need to take the full course again.

How long are the IPC training courses?

Most courses take 3-4 days, some may be shorter. Contact us for a precise schedule based on your needs.

Can I do the IPC WHMA A-620 training remotely?

IPC training courses can be done remotely however courses with practical assessments must be done in person. While we can offer remote training, we feel the value from in-person teaching is exponentially more valuable than the convenience of an online course. You can choose to train either in our fully equipped facility or at your location.

Is the IPC WHMA A-620 the right course for me?

There are more details about each course available which should help you identify what is the best fit for you, however, what you may think you need and what you actually need can be two different things – if you need more information don’t hesitate to get in touch!
